Energy Rescue: Formula Design Philosophy and Ingredient Breakdown
Why we made this product: each of these ingredients has its role, but no product had been formulated around multi-layered protection during alcohol metabolism.
The dose race among collagen products has been going on for years. 5,000mg, 8,000mg, 10,000mg: the numbers keep getting bigger and the packaging ever more eye-catching. But few people discuss a more fundamental question: what actually happens to collagen once it enters the body?
That question was PQ Labs' starting point when developing AURA Collagen Peptide Powder.
1. How Collagen Is Absorbed: What Happens Between Swallowing It and Reaching the Dermis
Once oral collagen enters the digestive system, it is broken down into small peptides and amino acids, absorbed through the gut into the bloodstream, and delivered to tissues throughout the body. In the dermis, fibroblasts use these raw materials to synthesize new collagen fibers. This is a multi-step biochemical process, not a matter of simply topping up and filling in.
The catch is fibroblast activity. As we age, fibroblasts gradually lose their ability to synthesize collagen, and oxidative stress and chronic inflammation speed up this decline further. Even with an ample supply of raw materials, if the cells' processing capacity falls short, overall collagen renewal stays slow. This is the structural reason many people keep taking collagen yet see limited results.
The AURA Collagen Peptide Powder formula was built around this problem. It considers not only the quality and quantity of the raw materials, but also includes ingredients that support the environment in which fibroblasts work.
AURA uses BHN (Body Restoration Collagen) Japanese-patented ultra-fine fish collagen peptide, with an average molecular weight of 1,000 Da.
Why 3,000mg, rather than chasing a higher number? A number of international randomized controlled trials have shown that a daily intake of 2.5g to 5g of low-molecular-weight fish collagen peptides significantly improves dermal elasticity and hydration within 8 weeks. We set the dose at 3,000mg to strike a precise balance between "ensuring efficacy" and "zero digestive burden": a dose that sits within the effective range confirmed by clinical research while being suitable for continued daily use.
BHN collagen is produced by enzymatic hydrolysis, which greatly reduces any fishy odor. It holds a Taiwanese skin-beauty patent (Invention Patent No. 436774, valid until 2032), plus two Japanese patents, one for skin beauty and one for absorption enhancement. BHN is one of the leading specialist fish collagen suppliers in Tokyo, and its products have been cited in numerous biomedical publications.
High-quality raw materials are not enough on their own; fibroblasts also have to actually get to work. That is the role eggshell membrane plays in the formula.
Eggshell membrane (ESM) is the thin film between the egg white and the shell. It has drawn attention in dermatological science in recent years, mainly because its composition overlaps closely with the extracellular matrix of the dermis. Ovoderm® is an eggshell membrane ingredient extracted by Eggnovo of Spain using a patented process; its measured composition includes 22% collagen, 25% elastin and 3% hyaluronic acid, along with type I, V and X collagen and a range of glycosaminoglycans (GAGs).
Ovoderm® is one of the ESM ingredients with the most complete body of clinical literature. Extracted by Spain's Eggnovo using a patented process, it is backed by more than 20 in vivo, in vitro and clinical studies. Two of these were randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trials that used 300mg/day as the intervention dose and measured skin biophysical parameters objectively with a Cutometer®. After 50 and 60 days respectively, they confirmed that skin elasticity in the Ovoderm® group rose significantly by 12% and firmness improved by as much as 51%, compared with only 37% in the placebo group over the same period. In addition, transepidermal water loss (TEWL), a measure of skin barrier function, fell by 43%, and wrinkles, sagging and roughness also improved significantly. A larger 12-week RCT in 2025 involving 100 women further confirmed that these improvements extend to multiple measures, including dermal density and hydration (p < 0.05).
All of these effects were achieved at 300mg/day, the same dose used in the AURA Collagen Peptide Powder formula. In terms of mechanism, Ovoderm® supplies fibroblasts with the structural components the extracellular matrix needs, while also inhibiting the activity of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs). MMPs are the main enzymes that break down collagen and elastin, and both chronic inflammation and UV exposure drive their overexpression. Ovoderm®'s role in the formula, then, is not just to supply raw materials but to slow collagen degradation in the dermal environment, so that fish collagen peptides can be turned into new collagen under relatively stable conditions.
The remaining three ingredients in the formula each play a different supporting role, together forming a complete collagen-care system. Elderberry extract 800mg: elderberry (Sambucus nigra) ranks near the top for anthocyanin content among the berries studied, and multiple studies have confirmed its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Collagen fibers are one of the main targets of free-radical oxidative damage, and chronic oxidative stress speeds up collagen breakdown and weakens fibroblast function. In the formula, this ingredient acts as a protective layer: it reduces sources of interference in the synthesis environment so that newly formed collagen isn't used up as quickly.
Pureway-C® vitamin C complex 100mg: vitamin C is an indispensable cofactor in collagen synthesis, driving the activity of prolyl hydroxylase and lysyl hydroxylase, the two enzymes that determine whether collagen's triple-helix structure forms correctly. Without vitamin C, collagen synthesis cannot be completed. This is an established biochemical mechanism, not an add-on benefit claim. Pureway-C® is a patented ingredient from One Innovation Labs in the United States that encapsulates citrus bioflavonoids in 93% naturally plant-derived lipids to improve absorption and the stability of its activity. It isn't a bit player; it's the catalytic switch for the entire synthesis reaction.
Edible bird's nest peptide 20mg: swiftlet bird's nest (edible bird's nest) is one of the most iconic rare ingredients in East Asia's traditional wellness heritage, and its most prized active component is sialic acid (also known as neuraminic acid). Edible bird's nest contains more than 200 times as much sialic acid as royal jelly, along with bioactive components such as EGF (epidermal growth factor–related peptides) that help support skin beauty. Modern research has demonstrated the antioxidant, anti-photoaging and cell-repair potential of bird's nest extract in cell and animal models, and human skin trials are steadily accumulating. Included in highly concentrated form at 20mg, it is the formula's bridge between modern science and the heritage of traditional Eastern ingredients.
PQ Labs makes formulation decisions based on the scientific literature, not market convention.
The core numbers, "3,000mg BHN Japanese-patented fish collagen + 300mg Ovoderm® patented eggshell membrane," each correspond to a separate line of clinical research. Multiple RCTs have established an effective dose range of 2.5g to 5g for BHN fish collagen peptides, while Ovoderm® has delivered significant improvements in skin elasticity, firmness and barrier function at a 300mg dose in several randomized, double-blind trials. The two research bases stand independently of each other. Elderberry, Pureway-C® vitamin C and edible bird's nest peptide then round out the synthesis system along three dimensions: antioxidant protection, enzymatic catalysis and traditional ingredients.
We don't believe that care is about blindly filling gaps. It's about getting the body's own synthesis mechanisms working again.

Collagen labels tout ever-bigger doses, but swallowed collagen never reaches the skin intact. Dose is only the start; molecular weight decides what arrives.
